Stuck Is Not the Same as Broken
Winching and recovery is for the unit that is still in one piece but cannot move. A truck slid off a ramp in the snow. A dump truck sank into soft ground at a job site. A bus dropped a wheel off the pavement. We do winching and recovery in Hagerstown with the winch lines, chains and heavy wreckers that these jobs require. Dispatch answers 24/7 at (240) 730-4539.
Common ways units get stuck
Hagerstown and Washington County have a mix of interstate shoulders, farm roads, steep ridge roads and construction sites. In winter, Wikipedia lists the January mean temperature at 32.9 degrees Fahrenheit, which means freeze and thaw cycles that leave shoulders soft. In spring, rain turns unpaved lots and gravel pads to mud. Heavy trucks leaving a pavement edge on a ramp or turning around at a loading area often end up on a slope or in a ditch.
How a winch-out works
A winch-out is a controlled pull. The wrecker positions on solid ground in line with the stuck unit, a winch line is run out and attached at a rated recovery point, and the pull is made slowly. Snatch blocks change the direction of the pull or double the force. Anchor points matter. A pull from the wrong point can bend a frame, tear a bumper or roll the unit.
Soft ground and slopes
When the ground is soft, we can lay down mats or boards to spread the load. On a slope, a second truck can hold the unit back while it is pulled. If a trailer is loaded and sunk, the load may need to be lightened before it comes out. The goal is to avoid turning a stuck unit into a rollover.
Guardrails, ramps and narrow shoulders
Recovery near live traffic needs traffic control. On the cloverleaf ramps at the I-70 and I-81 interchange, and on interstate shoulders, we place cones and lights and work with police when they are on scene. Some recoveries have to be done in stages because the unit cannot be pulled straight back to the road.
When it is more than a pull
Sometimes a winch-out reveals other trouble: a bent axle, a damaged tire or a leaking tank. We check the unit once it is on firm ground and tell you whether it can drive away or needs a tow.
Heavy units that need a second hand
Some winch-outs are really two-truck jobs. A loaded dump truck on a soft slope, a coach bus with a rear wheel off the pavement or a fully loaded trailer in a wet field will not come out cleanly with one line. Tell the dispatcher the weight, the slope and how far the unit is from firm ground, and we will send enough equipment the first time.

Winching & Recovery Questions
Is winching cheaper than a tow?
Often there is a lower minimum, but a hard recovery can cost more than a simple tow. Rates vary by unit, distance, scene and time of day.
Can you pull a loaded trailer out of a ditch?
Usually yes, using a heavy wrecker and proper rigging. If the weight is too high, the load may need to come off first.
Will pulling damage my truck?
Done correctly, no. We use rated recovery points and avoid pulls that bend the frame.
What if I am on private property?
Tell us who owns the land and whether anyone needs to be notified. Ground rules and access matter.
