Frequently Asked Questions
Heavy Duty Towing Questions
How much does heavy duty towing cost in Hagerstown?
It depends on the unit, the distance and the scene. Published rate sheets from other states show heavy tow hook-ups around $450 plus $9.50 to $10 per mile, recovery with a heavy wrecker around $350 to $850 per hour, rotators around $790 to $1,500 per hour, and storage around $65 to $100 per day. We put a written estimate in front of you before the hook-up.
What do I need to tell the dispatcher?
Your exact location (highway, direction, exit or mile marker), the type of unit and its weight, whether it is loaded and with what, what is wrong, and who is paying. If it is hazardous material, say so right away.
How long will it take you to arrive?
The dispatcher gives you an honest arrival estimate on the call. It depends on your location, the equipment needed and traffic, so we do not promise a fixed time.
Can you tow a loaded tractor-trailer?
Yes. Depending on the weight and the damage, we can tow the loaded unit, or we may need to transfer the cargo first. We explain the plan before work begins.
Do you work with insurance companies and fleets?
Yes. We bill drivers, fleets, insurers and brokers. Give the dispatcher the claim number or authorization when you call, and we will put it on the paperwork.
Do you tow RVs and buses?
Yes. We tow motorhomes, motorcoaches and school buses, and we handle the passenger side of a bus breakdown with care. See the bus towing page for details.
Heavy Duty Towing Questions
What counts as heavy duty towing?
Generally trucks and buses over about 26,000 pounds, plus any unit that needs a heavy wrecker or special equipment. If you are unsure, call and describe it.
Can you tow my unit to my own shop?
Yes. Tell the dispatcher where the unit should go. Distance changes the price, and the mileage is on your estimate.
Do you tow at night and on weekends?
Dispatch answers 24/7. After-hours charges can apply and will be on your estimate.
Who can authorize the tow?
The driver, the fleet, the owner, an insurer or a broker. Police can also request a tow from the scene.
Semi Towing Questions
Can you tow a semi with the trailer still loaded?
Often yes. Weight, axle damage and the load decide it. The dispatcher will ask questions and tell you the plan.
What if my drive line broke?
We tow with the drive shaft removed or the drive axles lifted. Tell us on the phone so the right equipment is sent.
My air brakes are locked. Can you still tow?
Yes. We release the spring brakes or lift the axle before moving the unit.
Can you move my trailer to another yard?
Yes, with a tractor attachment or a heavy wrecker. Give the dispatcher both addresses.
Rollover Recovery Questions
Who should I call first after a rollover?
Call 911 if anyone is hurt or if fuel or cargo is spilling. Then call dispatch at (240) 730-4539 so equipment can be sent.
Do you need police clearance?
Usually the scene has to be released before heavy work starts. We coordinate with whoever is directing traffic.
Can you recover a hazmat load?
Tell the dispatcher what is on board as soon as you can. The plan will depend on the material and on what the agencies on scene require.
Is it a one-truck job?
Not always. Heavy loads and soft ground can mean a rotator or a second wrecker. The dispatcher will ask about weight and position.
Winching & Recovery Questions
Is winching cheaper than a tow?
Often there is a lower minimum, but a hard recovery can cost more than a simple tow. Rates vary by unit, distance, scene and time of day.
Can you pull a loaded trailer out of a ditch?
Usually yes, using a heavy wrecker and proper rigging. If the weight is too high, the load may need to come off first.
Will pulling damage my truck?
Done correctly, no. We use rated recovery points and avoid pulls that bend the frame.
What if I am on private property?
Tell us who owns the land and whether anyone needs to be notified. Ground rules and access matter.
Heavy Equipment Transport Questions
What is the difference between a lowboy and a landoll?
A lowboy has a low, fixed deck. A landoll has a deck that tilts so a machine can drive on without ramps. We pick the trailer that fits the machine.
Can you move a machine that will not start?
Usually yes, by winching it onto the trailer. Tell us it is disabled when you call.
Do I need a permit?
If the load is over legal width, height or weight, yes. We will tell you what we need to know to check.
Do you haul out of state?
Yes, within the reach of I-81 and I-70. Distance and permits go into the estimate.
Bus Towing Questions
What if there are passengers on the bus?
Tell the dispatcher. Passengers should be moved to a safe place. A replacement bus is the operator's job, and we keep the scene clear for it.
Can you tow a rear-engine coach?
Yes. We ask which bus it is so the lift does not harm the suspension or the engine area.
Do you tow school buses?
Yes. Give us the district or contractor to bill and where the bus should go.
Can you bill the bus company directly?
Yes. Give the dispatcher the account or authorization on the call.
