Two Potomac bridges, one old and one new

I-81 crosses the Potomac about a mile downriver from town on a pair of bridges that Maryland rebuilt with three lanes each way, completed February 11, 2021. US 11 crosses the river on a separate two-lane bridge built in 1909 and rebuilt in 1979, passing over the C&O Canal park. If a truck breaks down on either crossing, say which bridge you are on and which way you are headed.

Roads that meet in the old town

US 11, MD 63 and MD 68 come together in the historic center. MD 63 and MD 68 share Conococheague Street through the Williamsport Historic District, then MD 63 turns onto Artizan Street. State maintenance resumes at the town limits, but inside town these are municipal streets with tight turns. I-81 Exit 1 serves MD 63 and MD 68 for Williamsport and Boonsboro, and Exit 2 serves US 11. A semi that takes a wrong turn into the historic blocks may need a different recovery than one on the ramp.

River, canal and railroad history

A ferry crossed the Potomac here in 1744. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal reached Williamsport in 1834 and moved Cumberland coal, and the Western Maryland Railway extended its line from Hagerstown in 1873 to reach that canal traffic. The Potomac has also stopped armies: floodwater kept Lee's army from crossing here in 1863, and a major flood in 1924 damaged the canal for good. High water is part of this town's story, and a low spot near the river deserves a careful look before any recovery.

The I-70 side

I-70 Exit 24 is MD 63 (Greencastle Pike), which leads to Williamsport and Huyett, and that I-70 Exit 26 is the I-81 junction. A truck that left I-70 at Exit 24 and stopped on MD 63 is a Williamsport call even if the driver says Hagerstown.

Power plant site and rail

FirstEnergy closed the R. Paul Smith Power Station in Williamsport on September 1, 2012, and rail still matters here: the Western Maryland line that reached town in 1873 followed the canal's coal traffic. Washington County Transit route 441 also links Williamsport to Hagerstown's transit center, so buses share the road with trucks. If a transit bus or a charter coach is involved, say so on the call.

Calling from the shoulder

  • Which bridge, ramp or street you are on
  • Direction of travel, plus the last exit you passed
  • Height and length of the unit if the plan involves a tight street
  • Loaded or empty, and hazmat
  • Driver, fleet or insurer paying

If the unit is on a bridge, stay clear of the traffic side and wait for the dispatcher's arrival estimate.

Williamsport Facts for Haulers

  • Town facts. Williamsport was incorporated in 1823, had 2,083 residents in 2020 and lies about 7.69 miles southwest of Hagerstown.
  • I-81 bridges. Maryland rebuilt the dual I-81 Potomac bridges with three lanes in each direction, finished February 11, 2021.
  • US 11 bridge. US 11 crosses the Potomac on a two-lane bridge built in 1909 and rebuilt in 1979 that passes over the C&O Canal park.
  • Floods. Potomac floodwater stopped Lee's army from crossing here in 1863, and a major flood in 1924 damaged the canal, which then closed for good.

Williamsport Questions

Can you recover a truck on the I-81 Potomac bridges?

Yes. Tell us northbound or southbound and how many lanes are blocked. The dispatcher gives an honest arrival estimate on the call, and we plan traffic control for a bridge before we roll.

What if I am in the old town on Conococheague Street?

Give us the cross street, the unit length and whether the trailer is loaded. Tight historic streets change the wrecker and the approach, so we confirm both on the call.

Do you cover the I-70 Exit 24 ramps to MD 63?

Yes. Exit 24 and Greencastle Pike are part of our Williamsport coverage, along with Huyett and I-81 Exits 1 and 2.

Do you give a price before the tow?

You get a written invoice estimate. Typical published rates are about $450 plus $9.50 to $10 a mile for a heavy hook-up and about $350 to $850 an hour for recovery. Rates vary by unit, distance, scene and time of day.
