Rural Roads, Heavy Loads

Heavy Duty Towing in Smithsburg is a different job from towing on the interstates. Smithsburg is a town of 2,977 people (2020 census) in Washington County, set in rolling hills at 742 feet, and the roads that serve it are state two-lanes, not freeways. A box truck, school bus, dump truck or loaded semi that leaves the pavement here needs a wrecker plan that fits the shoulder and the ditch. Dispatch answers 24/7. Call (240) 730-4539 or

The roads in and out

MD 66 is the only highway that runs directly through Smithsburg. It follows the old alignment of MD 64, and inside town it is Water Street, then Pennsylvania Avenue, with Bradbury Avenue north of town. MD 64 (Smithsburg Pike) bypasses the town and heads west to Hagerstown. MD 77 ends at MD 64 southeast of the town limits and MD 491 (Raven Rock Road) runs north from Smithsburg toward Cascade. To reach I-70 from town you take MD 66 south to Exit 35 at Mapleville Road, a diamond interchange in Beaver Creek.

Mapleville Road and the railroad

MD 66 runs 12.84 miles from Boonsboro to north of Smithsburg, mostly as Mapleville Road, through farmland and the villages of Mapleville and San Mar. It parallels the western flank of South Mountain. A roundabout at Mount Aetna Road was built in 2002, and the road crosses CSX's Hanover Subdivision at grade. A roundabout is a tight turn for a long trailer and a railroad crossing is a hazard of its own, so tell us if you are at either one.

Camp David country

Smithsburg is close to former Fort Ritchie and just west of Camp David. Wikipedia notes that President Lyndon Johnson was a frequent visitor because of it, and attended Easter services at St. Ann's Episcopal Church in 1967. Tell us if a police officer is on scene and where they want the truck moved.

Schools and plants

Columbia Machine, formerly Bikle Manufacturing, is a business in Smithsburg, and Smithsburg High School enrolls 902 students. School buses and delivery trucks share these narrow roads, so we ask whether a bus has passengers on board before we plan any tow.

Farm roads and school roads

Smithsburg sits between the Appalachian Mountains and the Chesapeake Bay watershed, and the area is known for rolling hills and open space. On two-lane roads like these, a heavy truck often has no good place to pull over, a curve hides what is ahead and the nearest cross street may be a farm lane. Use the road name and the nearest village (Mapleville, San Mar, Cavetown, Cascade, Foxville or Mount Aetna) to describe where you are.

Plan for the long way around

The closest tie to the interstate network is I-70 at Exit 35, and the closest city is Hagerstown by way of MD 64. Wikipedia lists I-70 via MD 66, Hagerstown via MD 64 and Thurmont via MD 77, so a wrong turn can put you on a different route. Check the road number on the sign and read it to the dispatcher.

Smithsburg Questions

Can you recover a truck from a ditch on a rural Smithsburg road?

Yes. Tell us the road, the nearest cross street, how far off the pavement you are and the unit type and load. Soft ground can change the wrecker and the winch plan, and the dispatcher gives an arrival estimate on the call.

What if I am stuck on the CSX crossing on MD 66?

Call the railroad number on the blue Emergency Notification sign first, then call us at (240) 730-4539. We start once the railroad confirms the tracks are clear.

Do you cover I-70 Exit 35?

Yes. Exit 35 at MD 66 and Mapleville Road is part of our Smithsburg coverage.

Do you tow school buses and box trucks here?

Yes, along with dump trucks, semis and equipment. Give us the length, weight and whether passengers or cargo are on board.
