US 40 is Main Street

US 40 is the town's main street, running west toward Hancock and east toward Hagerstown, and in town it is Cumberland Street. MD 68 ends at US 40 in Clear Spring and runs east toward Williamsport and Boonsboro. It starts as four-lane Mill Street through a commercial area, then becomes Clear Spring Road outside town. I-70 Exit 18

I-70 Exit 18 is MD 68 (Clear Spring Road), about 0.47 mile from the MD 68 western end at US 40. It is a diamond interchange, and westbound I-70 signs remind drivers that I-68 and MD 68 are different highways. The spring and the history

The town takes its name from a spring that is still the only local source of ground water. Four sites are on the National Register of Historic Places: the Joseph Fiery House, Wilson School, Rufus Wilson Complex and Plumb Grove. Population peaked at 721 in 1880, and the town has stayed small ever since.
