A Small Town on a Through Route
Heavy Duty Towing in Funkstown is about tight streets and trucks that should have stayed on the interstate. Funkstown had 852 residents in the 2020 census, was incorporated in 1840 and sits on Antietam Creek south of Hagerstown. Its only major road, US 40 Alternate, is the town's main street. We tow and recover semis, box trucks, buses and RVs, and dispatch answers 24/7. Call (240) 730-4539 or
.One road through town
US 40 Alternate follows Frederick Road, Baltimore Street and Westside Street through Funkstown. West of town it ends in Hagerstown and east of town it runs through Boonsboro toward Frederick, 22.97 miles in all. I-70 passes just south of the town limits. The nearest interchanges are at US 40 (Exit 32) and MD 65 (Exit 29), and both are more than a mile away. A truck leaving I-70 at the wrong ramp can end up on the narrow historic street, so tell us your last exit.
Antietam Creek
Antietam Creek flows south through the town limits. Any truck that goes off the road near the creek needs a wrecker plan that accounts for the water, and we ask about it on the first call.
A Civil War town
The Battle of Funkstown was fought July 10, 1863, during the Gettysburg campaign, as Lee's army retreated toward Virginia. Confederate cavalry under J.E.B. Stuart held a defensive line against Union cavalry under John Buford, and the day-long fight left 479 casualties. The Chaney house served as a hospital. The Funkstown Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000, so the buildings that line the street are old and close to the pavement.
MD 65 and the I-70 ramps
MD 65 (Sharpsburg Pike) meets I-70 at Exit 29, a partial cloverleaf where the road widens to four divided lanes and a park-and-ride lot sits in the southeast quadrant. North of the interchange, MD 65 enters Hagerstown past South Hagerstown High School. Exit 32 is US 40, the National Pike, into Hagerstown. Tell us which ramp you used and whether you turned toward town or away from it.
Where the name comes from
Henry Funk bought 88 acres from Frederick Calvert, the sixth Baron Baltimore, in 1754, and the settlement was first called Jerusalem. The town was established in 1767. Funkstown has lost residents since its 1990 peak, from 1,136 to 852 in 2020, so the street grid is old and was never widened for tractor-trailers.
Why it matters for heavy trucks
The town covers only about half a square mile by Wikipedia's figures (0.36 or 0.55 square miles, depending on which figure you use), so a long trailer on a corner has little room. Parked cars and historic buildings narrow the picture. A recovery here may need a spotter, a rotating plan and possibly a street closure arranged with the police.
