The Narrowest Point in Maryland, Wide Open to Trucks
Heavy Duty Towing in Hancock covers a town of 1,557 people (2020 census) that matters far more than its size suggests. Hancock was incorporated in 1853, and the north-south distance between the Pennsylvania and West Virginia lines here is 1.8 miles, the narrowest in any state. That squeeze funnels I-70, I-68, US 40 and US 522 through the same junction. We tow and recover semis, buses, RVs, dump trucks and equipment in Hancock, and dispatch answers 24/7. Call (240) 730-4539 or
.The junction
I-68 ends in Hancock at an interchange with I-70, US 40 and US 522. I-68 calls it Exit 82. I-70 calls it Exit 1, signed 1A west and 1B south. US 522 heads north into Pennsylvania with I-70 and south into West Virginia. East of town, I-70 Exit 3 is MD 144 and Exit 5 is MD 615 (Millstone Road). Exit 3 is a left exit westbound with no westbound entrance, and MD 144 has no direct access to westbound I-70 either, so a truck that guesses wrong may have to run to Exit 5 to turn around. Tell us the exit you are nearest.
What trucks come through
I-70 carries traffic from Baltimore to the Pittsburgh suburbs, and I-68 heads west toward Cumberland. The I-68 stretch includes the Sideling Hill road cut, which has a rest area and welcome center. I-68 runs 81.09 miles in Maryland.
Main Street, the canal and the trail
MD 144 follows Main Street through downtown Hancock one block south of the C&O Canal and the Western Maryland Rail Trail. Main Street was the old US 40 until a bypass opened in 1966. The rail trail runs 28 miles from Fort Frederick State Park to Little Orleans through Hancock. A large truck on Main Street shares the road with pedestrians and trail users, so a street recovery needs a careful plan.
Winter and history
On January 5, 1862, Stonewall Jackson began a siege of Hancock that failed because of weather, a reminder that the Potomac valley here gets hard winter. If you break down in snow or ice, tell us whether the road is plowed.
How far from Hagerstown
The I-70 milepost table places Hancock's Exit 1 at about milepost 1 and Hagerstown's US 40 exit (Exit 32) at milepost 31.68, so it is about 31 miles of interstate between them. Because of that distance, tell us where you are as exactly as you can.
Rail trail and canal visitors
Hancock is a stop on the C&O Canal and the Western Maryland Rail Trail, so visitors in RVs and buses may be on the road. The C&O Canal's Hancock visitor center is on MD 144. If you are with a group, tell us how many people are on board.
