Five highways in one town

US 40 Alternate runs along Main Street, linking Hagerstown to the west with Frederick to the east. MD 34 leads to Sharpsburg and crosses the Potomac into Shepherdstown, West Virginia. MD 66 goes north to Smithsburg and to I-70. MD 67 leads to US 340. MD 68 runs to Williamsport and I-81. Because so many routes meet in the same few blocks, a stalled tractor-trailer here can block more than one road. Tell us which street you are on.

Turner's Gap and the climb east

US 40 Alternate crosses South Mountain at Turner's Gap, a wind gap at 1,070 feet, about 400 feet above the surrounding lowlands. The Middletown Valley lies to the east and the Hagerstown Valley to the west. A loaded truck climbing out of Boonsboro is working hard, and a loaded truck coming down is working its brakes. Heavy fighting took place at the gap in September 1862 during the Battle of South Mountain, and the area is part of the Turner's and Fox's Gaps Historic District.

I-70 over the mountain

I-70 climbs South Mountain east of Exit 35 (MD 66 at Mapleville Road), passing through Greenbrier State Park on the way up. It adds an eastbound climbing lane on the ascent, passes under US 40 and the Appalachian Trail at the top, and enters Frederick County. Greenbrier State Park is three miles northeast of Boonsboro on 1,408 acres. A truck that fails on the grade needs the right wrecker and a safe place to set up, and we plan both on the call.

Stone bridges on MD 68

MD 68 runs 18.5 miles from Clear Spring to Boonsboro and crosses two early stone arch bridges that are still in use: one over Antietam Creek dated 1833 and one over Beaver Creek dated 1824. They are old structures, so weight matters. If you are near either bridge, tell us the weight and length of your unit before we send a wrecker.

The JFK 50

Boonsboro is the starting point of the JFK 50 Mile race each November. If crowds or a race are near your stop, tell us.

History on the pavement

A road through the gap was created in 1756 to connect Frederick with Fort Frederick, and the historic road here was improved in 1758. Local lore credits George Boone, a cousin of Daniel Boone, with founding the town. Today US 40 Alternate is still the road over the mountain at the gap.
